Subject: Kelloggs

Dr. John Harvey Kellogg began practicing medicine in the 1870s. He 
ardently disapproved of masturbation and urged parents to be wary of 
signs that their children were indulging in it. He published a paper on 
the 39 signs of the "secret vice" which included, among others, weakness, 
early symptoms of consumption(TB), sudden change in disposition, 
lassitude, dullness of the eyes, premature and defective development, 
sleeplessness, fickleness, untrustworthiness, bashfulness, love of 
solitude, unnatural boldness,, mock piety and round shoulders. Given his 
status as a physician, Kellogg was professionally admired and publicly  
influential, earning a fortune publishing books discouraging 
masturbation. His recommended treatments for the "secret vice" were quite 
extreme. For example, he advocated that especially persistent 
masturbation in 
boys be treated by sewing the foreskin with silver wire, or as a last 
resort, circumcision without anesthesia. Female masturbation was to be 
treatd by burning the clitoris with carbolic acid. Besides deploring 
masturbation, Kellogg was especially concerned with dietary health. He 
urged people to eat more cereals and nuts and less meat, because he 
believed that eating meat increased sexual desire. Thus, Kellogg's 
cornflakes were invented almost literally as anti-masturbation food. 
Although Kellogg married, it appears that he slept alone and never 
consummated his marriage.
