There have been a recent spate of problems with using and upgrading
shareware. This notice is to warn people of the issues.
Recently people have been upgrading GirlFriend 6.0 to Wife 1.0, and
findingit's a memory hog, and leaving little resources for other
applications.

It has also been noticed that after using it for about a year, Wife 1.0
will start to spawn child processes the eat up what's left of the
resources. No mention of this particular phenomena is mentioned in
the brochure, though it is a general belief that this happens just
because of the nature of the application.

Other peculiarities to watch out for when operating Wife 1.0 is that
it has a tendency to launch itself at system initialisation, where it
can monitor all other system activity. You might find that applications
that ran perfectly OK before installing Wife 1.0 no longer are allowed
to operate. Examples of these are PokerNight 10.3, BeerBash 2.5, and
PubNight 7.0. Other undesirables that have been known to occur with
Wife 1.0 are that it automatically installs unwanted plug-ins such as
MotherInLaw 55.8 and BrotherInLaw Beta Release. As a consequence
system performance will diminish with each passing day.

These features have been asked to be removed in Wife 2.0. In addition
other features have been requested for Wife 2.0, these are:
n A "Don't remind me again" button
n A minimize button
n An install shield feature that allows Wife 2.0 to be installed with
the option to uninstall at anytime without the loss to cache and other
  resources.
n An option to run the network driver in promiscuos mode which would
allow the systems hardware probe feature to have greater use.

If you want to avoid the headache of installing Wife 1.0 the suggestion
is you stick with your current version of GirlFriend. Even here there
is a problem. You cannot apparently install GirlFriend 2.0 on top of
GirlFriend 1.0, you must uninstall GirlFriend 1.0 first. This is
apparently a long standing bug which everyone should be aware of.
Apparently this is caused by different versions of GirlFriend having
conflicts over the shared use of the I/O port. You would have though
they would have fixed this stupid bug by now. To make matters worse, the
uninstall routine for GirlFriend doesn't work too well, so there are
always undesirable traces of this application left in the system.
Another annoying problem with all versions of GirlFriend is the
annoying popu message about upgrading them to Wife 1.0

++++  BUG WARNING ++++
Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. If you try to install mistress 1.1
before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before
executing a self de-installation. Then Mistress 1.1 will refuse to
install claiming insufficient system resources.

++++  WORKAROUND ++++
To avoid to above bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 on a different system
any never run any file transfer applications such as Laplink 6.9. Also,
beware of similar shareware applications that may carry viruses that may
affect Wife 1.0. Another solution would be to run Mistress 1.1 via a
UseNet provider under an anonymous name. Here again, beware of viruses
which can be accidentally downloaded from the UseNet. Always be sure
that any I/O transferred is done using a firewall.
